Abstract

The Pilotage Technology R&D Center, in response to the production needs of oilfields and in collaboration with domestic universities, has leveraged aerospace research technologies and incorporated specialized anti-wear additives. After two years of development, it has successfully created a specialized “Pilotage Thread-Sealing Grease” for use in oilfield operations.

According to API RP 5A3, thread compound is defined as “a substance applied to the threaded connections of tubulars prior to make‑up; it provides lubrication during make‑up and, in service, helps to provide auxiliary sealing against high internal and external pressures.”

The pilot thread sealant is an API‑compliant oil‑casing thread sealant formulation, whose composition includes a semi‑synthetic base thickened with a novel thickener. Lubricating oil It enhances the low‑temperature fluidity of the base grease, facilitating application during winter. By incorporating various solid additives—such as aluminum powder, flake graphite, lightweight calcium carbonate, tin bronze powder, molybdenum disulfide powder—and high‑performance rust inhibitors, it ensures that oilfield casing and tubing can be stored outdoors for extended periods without corrosion of the threaded ends. Additionally, other anti‑wear agents are included to maintain excellent high‑temperature lubricity and prevent galling during the assembly of threaded connections on oilfield casings and tubing. Furthermore, the inclusion of a novel, highly effective sealing material in the grease’s formulation guarantees superior sealing performance.
