Abstract
On June 22, the second stage of the 2015 China环塔 (International) Rally officially got underway, running from Heshuo to the Shanshan Base Camp. The stage spans 478 kilometers, with the finish line located on the coal‑dedicated road at Shalhu in Shanshan County. The course is complex and demanding, featuring a mix of Gobi desert, riverbeds, salt marshes, and yardang landforms, along with significant elevation changes. As a high‑speed leg, it includes sections with mountain‑looping routes and intricate pothole‑filled stretches, putting drivers’ ability to adapt to the terrain to the test. Moreover, the route traverses the Flaming Mountains, where surface temperatures regularly exceed 70 degrees Celsius, posing formidable challenges for drivers, vehicles, and fuel.
On June 23, the 2015 Taklamakan Rally reached its first rest day. After two days of scorching heat and bumpy stages across the Black Gobi, all teams had ample time to repair their vehicles and prepare for the next leg—because before the next rest day arrives, every machine will face a 200-kilometer pure-desert stage and a 600-kilometer stage that will be the longest in the rally’s history, as the event is about to enter its “litmus test” phase.
