Abstract
On July 28, Beijing time, the Men’s Basketball Four-Nation Tournament kicked off in Kunshan, with China’s Red Team taking on Serbia in their opening match. Despite the absence of Ding Yanyuhang and Zhou Qi, Abdusalam delivered a standout performance, scoring a team-high 15 points and grabbing 5 rebounds, while Wang Zhelin added 13 points and 8 rebounds. With five players scoring in double figures, China edged Serbia 74–71, securing an impressive opening victory in the Kunshan leg of the tournament.
For China’s men’s basketball Red Team, Abdusalam scored 15 points and grabbed 5 rebounds, Wang Zhelin added 13 points and 8 rebounds, Fang Shuo contributed 11 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 steals, Liu Zhixuan chipped in 11 points and 4 rebounds, Dong Hanlin recorded 10 points and 7 rebounds, while Zhao Jiwei tallied 6 points, 5 assists, and 3 steals, and Zhao Rui posted 6 points, 2 rebounds, and 2 assists. For Serbia, Jokic finished with 17 points, 3 assists, and 2 rebounds.
The game began, and the Chinese men’s basketball team got off to a strong start with tenacious defense, leading 7–5 at the halfway point of the first quarter. In the second half, Serbia stepped up their defensive intensity, forcing the Chinese Red Team into more turnovers. With four minutes remaining in the quarter, the score was tied at 7–7. Abudushalamu then sank a layup, and Dong Hanlin converted both free throws, sparking a 5–0 run that extended China’s lead to five points. After Serbia hit a three-pointer to stem the bleeding, they fought hard to chip away at the deficit. Toward the end of the quarter, Dong Hanlin delivered a clutch performance, scoring four straight points to help his team pull away once again. At the end of the first period, the Chinese Red Team led Serbia 18–12.
In the second quarter, Serbia hit two three-pointers to cut the deficit to 18–21. China’s offense dipped for a spell, but Wang Zhelin kept his composure, scoring on two consecutive attempts to steady the team. With just over five minutes remaining in the half, China led Serbia 25–20. Abdusalam drained a long-range three, followed by a layup from Liu Zhixuan, as China went on a 5–0 run to extend their lead to 10 points. Late in the period, the two sides traded baskets in a back-and-forth stretch; with 46 seconds left, China still held a seven-point advantage. Dong Hanlin was particularly aggressive today, converting a putback off a second-chance opportunity to push the margin to nine. At halftime, China’s Red Team led Serbia 35–26.
In the second half, Wang Zhelin leveraged his height to repeatedly draw fouls in the paint, while Liu Zhixuan knocked down a three-pointer from beyond the arc. China’s men’s team then went on a 6-0 run to extend their lead to 15 points. Serbia began to fade on both ends of the floor, and after Abdusalam added two more points in the post, the gap widened further to 17. Although Serbia responded with another clutch three, their offense failed to gain much traction, and the margin remained stubbornly around 15 points. At the end of the third quarter, China’s Red Team led Serbia 56-43.
In the final quarter, Serbia’s perimeter shooters caught fire, unleashing a 9–3 run to cut the deficit to seven points. China’s defense began to buckle, and Serbia responded with another 7–4 spurt, narrowing the gap to four. At the critical juncture, Fang Shuo drained a three-pointer, restoring a seven-point lead for China. Serbia gradually regained momentum; Stojanović converted a three-point play to bring the score within 64–68. Fang Shuo struck again with a clutch three, stabilizing the situation, and Abdusalam followed up with a successful three-point play, giving China an eight-point advantage with just over a minute remaining in the fourth. Late in the period, Serbia kept chipping away, closing the gap with a 5–0 run that trimmed the deficit to three with 6.5 seconds left. A turnover on the ensuing possession proved costly, but fortunately, Serbia’s putback from the backboard also missed. Ultimately, China edged Serbia 74–71, securing an opening‑win in the Kunshan leg of the FIBA Four Nations Tournament.
