Abstract

On August 4, Beijing time, the second day of the men’s basketball four-nation tournament in Jilin unfolded, with China’s Blue Team—fresh off a victory in their opening match—taking on Ukraine. Wu Qian exploded for 29 points, 2 rebounds, and 3 assists, while Hu Jinqiu added 20 points. In the end, China’s Blue Team edged Ukraine 91–86, securing their second straight win in this warm-up series.

For the Chinese men’s basketball team, Wu Qian scored 29 points, Hu Jinqiu had 20 points and 4 rebounds, Zhou Zhandong contributed 9 points and 2 assists, Hu Mingxuan added 8 points, 4 rebounds, and 3 assists, Han Dejun chipped in with 7 points and 6 rebounds, Ren Junfei recorded 13 points, 5 rebounds, and 4 assists, while Li Xiaoxu scored 2 points and Li Jingyu netted 3.

In the first quarter, Hu Mingxuan dished out an assist to Han Dejun for a thunderous alley‑oop, while Pavel drove to the basket for a layup and then hit a midrange jumper. Wu Qian followed with two straight three-pointers, but Ukraine capitalized on China’s turnovers to keep chipping away at the lead. The score traded blows, but Wu Qian seemed unstoppable, sinking another pair of threes in quick succession, and Hu Jinqiu finished with a fastbreak dunk, forcing Ukraine to call a timeout. After the break, however, China sputtered, unable to find the basket, while Ukraine, led by Pavel’s mix of inside and outside scoring, went on a 7–1 run. At the end of the first quarter, China trailed 18–19 by one point.

In the second quarter, a Ukrainian player converted a second-chance opportunity over Wu Qian’s head, but Wu Qian quickly answered with a three-pointer of his own. Ukraine responded with a fast-break dunk, while Hu Jinqiu showcased his silky footwork to finish effortlessly at the rim. Han Dejun powered in for a tough layup, and Zhou Zhandong buried a buzzer-beating three, keeping the score tightly contested. After drawing a double-team, Zhou Zhandong dished out an assist to Hu Jinqiu for another emphatic dunk, while Wu Qian once again lit up the game: first drawing fouls on a fast break to earn free throws, then sealing a spectacular 3-plus-1 play. At halftime, Team China held a 44–38 lead, up by six.

In the second half, Hu Mingxuan hit a three-pointer, and China’s Blue Team went on a 7-2 run to extend their lead to 11 points. A scuffle erupted during a rebounding battle, with Ren Junfei and Ukraine’s Maksym each picked up an unsportsmanlike foul. In the latter part of the quarter, Ukraine tightened their defense, cutting the deficit to just 10 points at one point. At the critical juncture, Wu Qian drained his seventh three of the game, and Hu Jinqiu converted both free throws, helping China pull away again to 67-52. As the quarter drew to a close, Ukraine kept chipping away, with Aleksandr sinking a buzzer-beater to end the third period, leaving China’s Blue Team ahead 71-61.

In the fourth quarter, Hu Jinqiu maintained his composure and scored four straight points, while China’s Blue Team erupted with a 7-2 run to extend their lead to 15. Ukraine, relying on individual brilliance, kept pace, cutting the deficit to eight with a 7-0 spurt. However, as China’s offense cooled in the latter half of the frame and turnovers mounted, Ukraine seized the opportunity to unleash a 14-4 counter‑attack, trimming the gap to just two points with little more than a minute remaining. At the end of the period, Wu Qian added four points from the free-throw line, leaving China’s Blue Team up by five with 5.1 seconds left. In the end, China’s Blue Team edged Ukraine 91–86, securing their second straight win in this warm-up series.
