Abstract

As August 12, 2015 was drawing to a close, Tianjin made headlines in an extraordinary way; the mushroom cloud over Tianjin Port and flames blazing across the sky ensured it would be a sleepless night.
A deafening roar echoed across the night sky, and a mushroom cloud shot up into the heavens, its fiery glow reddening the darkness. In the densely built-up district, windows shattered, and those who were asleep were either jolted awake, wounded and bleeding, or left to rest in eternal sleep—such was the sudden calamity that had befallen them.

At approximately 10:52 p.m. on August 12, a fire and explosion erupted at the container yard of the hazardous‑materials warehouse belonging to Ruihai International Logistics Company, located at Gate No. 7 of Tianjin Port in the Binhai New Area, damaging the Donghai Road Light Rail Station and nearby residential buildings. As of now, the accident has resulted in 17 fatalities, 11 critically injured, and 248 people hospitalized for observation and treatment. During firefighting operations, a secondary explosion occurred, trapping some personnel at the scene; rescue efforts are underway with all available resources.
Following the explosion, numerous residential and office buildings near the site suffered shattered windows and doors. At the Donghai Road terminal of the Jinbin Light Rail between the Binhai New Area and downtown Tianjin, part of the roof collapsed, with rolling shutters and glass damaged. On the rooftop of an eight-story building one kilometer from the blast site, reporters observed sections of the roof had caved in and doors were warped. As of around 3 a.m. on the 13th, flames could still be seen flickering in the distance, accompanied by occasional smaller explosions.
Multiple eyewitnesses reported that the explosions occurred at least twice, with flames shooting skyward and a massive mushroom cloud rising. According to the official Weibo account of the China Earthquake Networks Center, the first explosion took place at 11:34:06 p.m. on August 12, with a local magnitude (ML) of approximately 2.3—equivalent to 3 tons of TNT. The second explosion followed 30 seconds later, with a local magnitude of about 2.9, corresponding to roughly 21 tons of TNT.

The explosion in Tianjin has shocked Tianjin, the entire nation, and the world. Numerous celebrities have offered prayers for Tanggu, while several hotels in the area have opened their doors free of charge to those unable to return home. Many citizens rushed to blood centers to donate, and countless volunteers have been on the ground, lending a hand in the rescue efforts. The front pages of U.S. network CNN, Britain’s BBC, and Italy’s Rai all featured the massive explosion in Tanggu, Tianjin.
Let us pray for Tanggu—may the living be safe and well, and may the departed rest in peace. No one knows whether tomorrow or an accident will come first; let us cherish the present and live each day to the fullest.
