Abstract

On June 12, Beijing time, the third and final game of the 2018 China–Australia International Men’s Basketball Challenge was held in Beijing. Abdusalam exploded for 20 points and 5 rebounds, while Wang Zhelin added 14 points. Despite suffering two consecutive losses, China’s Red Team ultimately defeated the Australian NBL All-Stars 82–62, concluding the exhibition series with a 1–2 record.

China’s men’s basketball team had four players score in double figures: Abdusalam with 20 points and 5 rebounds, Zhao Rui with 10 points, 2 rebounds, and 3 steals, Sun Minghui with 16 points, 6 rebounds, and 4 assists, Wang Zhelin with 14 points and 5 rebounds, Yu Changdong with 5 points and 2 rebounds, Liu Zhixuan with 7 points and 2 steals, and Dong Hanlin with 7 points and 6 rebounds.

The game began, and Wang Zhelin carried over his strong form from the previous two matches, scoring six points right out of the gate. China’s Red Team exploded with a 13–2 run, combining drives to the basket and outside shooting to take an early lead. The NBL All-Stars immediately called a timeout; upon returning, they tightened their defense and gradually trimmed the deficit to seven points. In the second half, China upped the intensity, with Abdusalam hitting a three-pointer to extend the lead to 10. Ballo then stepped up, leading the NBL All-Stars on a charge to close the gap. After responding with a 12–3 run, they cut the margin to just one point with a little over a minute remaining in the first quarter. Yu Changdong delivered a crucial burst, scoring five points through shots and free throws, stabilizing the Red Team’s position. At the end of the first quarter, China’s Red Team led Australia’s NBL All-Stars, 24–18.

In the second quarter, substitute Zhao Rui erupted for 8 straight points, and led China’s Red Team on a 12–6 run to extend their lead to 12 points. The NBL All-Stars continued to struggle offensively; after Abdusalam sank both free throws, China had widened the gap to 19 points. Late in the period, the NBL squad clawed back some ground, narrowing the score to 30–45 at one point. Abdusalam then hit a buzzer-beating three-pointer, and at halftime, China’s Red Team held a 48–30 advantage over the Australian NBL All-Stars.

In the second half, the NBL All-Stars stepped up their defensive intensity, stringing together a 9-4 run to cut the deficit to 13 points. However, as the quarter wore on, turnovers for the NBL squad began to mount, and after China’s men’s team forced several consecutive steals, they extended their lead back to 18 points. Late in the period, the two teams locked into a stalemate, with the gap hovering around 16 points. In the final moments, Barlow buried a buzzer-beating three-pointer, leaving China’s Red Team ahead 66-53 at the end of the third quarter.
In the fourth quarter, the NBL All-Stars committed a string of turnovers, while China’s men’s basketball team found success from multiple sources, outscoring their opponents 9-2 to extend the lead to 20 points. Through the latter half of the frame, the NBL squad remained sluggish on both ends of the floor, and with just over two minutes remaining in the period, China still held a commanding 20-point advantage. Late in the quarter, Zhao Rui and Wang Zhelin each picked up their fifth fouls and had to leave the game, effectively sealing the outcome. In the end, China’s Red Team cruised to an 82-62 victory over the Australian NBL All-Stars.
