Abstract

At the 2019 Kunshan International Basketball Tournament (Kunshan Four-Nation Tournament), China’s men’s basketball team faced their final opponent, Puerto Rico. China led at halftime but saw their lead erased in the third quarter; they then mounted a comeback in the fourth, ultimately edging Puerto Rico 78–72.

With these results, China cruised to a 73–62 victory over Angola in their first match and followed it up with an 89–73 win against Croatia, securing three straight wins. The Chinese men’s basketball team claimed the championship of the 2019 Kunshan International Basketball Tournament with an undefeated record, while Yi Jianlian was named MVP. Ahead of the FIBA World Cup, the Chinese squad will also play two warm-up games against Brazil.

Looking back at the first two games, the tournament kicked off on August 10, with China’s men’s basketball team taking on Angola in their opening match. After a hard-fought four‑quarter battle, they secured an auspicious victory. During the game, Yi Jianlian came off the bench to thunderous cheers from the crowd, though his performance was rather average, suggesting he’s still in the process of finding his rhythm. This was Yi’s first official warm‑up game since the national team convened; earlier, the Yao Foundation charity match was more of a showcase event.

On August 11, the second day of competition saw China’s men’s basketball team face Croatia. Yi Jianlian maintained his outstanding form from the previous day, scoring a game-high 19 points and grabbing 7 rebounds, while Zhou Qi added 15 points and 13 rebounds.

In this game, Zhou Qi delivered a solid but unremarkable offensive performance, while shining on the defensive end and in the battle for rebounds. In particular, his six offensive boards highlighted his tenacity and physical advantages. For years, Zhou Qi has been criticized for his tendency to hang around the perimeter; however, judging from this summer’s preseason contest, he’s now more willing to take on the gritty, inside‑out work. He’s aggressively going after rebounds and setting screens, and his relentless effort on defense has significantly lightened Yi Jianlian’s defensive load.

This 2019 Kunshan International Basketball Tournament served as an excellent warm-up for the Chinese team. China’s World Cup group opponents—Côte d’Ivoire, Poland, and Venezuela—come from Africa, Europe, and the Americas, respectively. Similarly, the three teams in this year’s Kunshan Four-Nation Tournament hail from Africa (Angola), Europe (Croatia), and the Americas (Puerto Rico), with Angola and Puerto Rico fielding full‑strength national squads (while Croatia can be considered a second‑tier side). As such, the tournament offers significant competitive value.

An important purpose of this tournament is to assess the team’s form. Based on the matches and the players’ overall performances, the final 12-man roster is expected to be announced soon. However, whoever makes the cut and whoever stays behind will all represent the Chinese national team as they face new challenges, leading the way. Lubricating oil We will also join forces with the Chinese men’s national basketball team to take on the World Cup and usher in a new era for Chinese basketball!
