Abstract

It’s said that the grease industry has been quite lively lately, thanks to a “new contender”—Ling Hang Grease! From the moment it hit the market, even the veterans in the industry couldn’t sit still. Not only is its quality top-notch, but its price is also very reasonable, making it a real dark horse with formidable competitiveness and impact!

As for why this “newcomer” has become so popular right after her debut, it’s because she comes from a distinguished background, and the team behind her is no ordinary group. Just look—Ling Hang Lubricant’s Li Hexin and Guo Ran were on… Lubricating oil 》published an article titled “Performance Improvement of Calcium Sulfonate Complex Grease,” laying a solid foundation for enhancing the performance of Ling Hang grease.

Ling Hang has always been low-key. Engineer Li and Engineer Guo kept telling the editor, “Stay low-key, stay low-key—doing a good job with oil is our real duty!”
But I can’t keep a low profile—when something this awesome happens, it’s only fitting that I trumpet it loud and clear for everyone to hear. That’s just my style!

《 Lubricating oil 》(Bimonthly) was first published in 1986 and is sponsored by China Petroleum Lubricant Company and the China Petroleum Lubricant Science and Technology Information Station.

“Lubricants” is the only domestic scientific and technological journal that comprehensively covers the entire lifecycle of lubricant research, production, and application. It is jointly sponsored by China Petroleum Lubricant Company and the China Petroleum Lubricant Science and Technology Information Center. “Lubricants” enjoys broad influence within China’s lubricant industry, earning growing recognition, respect, and favor from peers in the field, and has been indexed by Chemical Abstracts Service (CAS) in the United States, as well as by the Chinese Academic Journals CD‑ROM Edition and the China Academic Journals Online platform.

Calcium sulfonate complex grease

Calcium sulfonate complex grease is a high‑performance, high‑temperature, long‑life lubricant designed for heavy‑duty industrial equipment. Formulated with a high‑performance calcium sulfonate thickener, it incorporates a high‑viscosity imported mineral base oil and carefully selected additives, delivering exceptional wear‑resistant lubrication even under severe conditions such as heavy loads, low speeds, high water exposure, and elevated temperatures.

Performance Advantages

◎ High-viscosity base oil, ensuring adequate oil-film strength under primary operating conditions.

By employing composite calcium sulfonate thickening technology in conjunction with a carefully formulated base oil that delivers an exceptional oil‑film structure, this grease exhibits superior anti‑friction and wear‑resistance properties.

◎ Excellent high-temperature resistance

A high dropping point exceeding 330°C imparts exceptional thermal stability to the grease, enabling long‑term operation under service conditions of up to 150°C.

◎ Excellent water resistance and stability

It can provide continuous protection even in the presence of large amounts of water and water vapor.

◎ Excellent mechanical shear performance

Its unique mechanical shear stability ensures that the grease remains at the lubrication site over extended periods, without softening or leaking.

◎ Excellent corrosion protection performance

Calcium sulfonate thickener provides excellent rust protection in highly water-saturated environments, even over extended lubrication intervals.

◎ Enhanced extreme-pressure and anti-wear performance

Its unique layered molecular structure of scales provides exceptional extreme-pressure and anti-wear protection, even without the addition of any extreme-pressure or anti-wear additives.

Composition and Structural Characteristics of High-Base Calcium Sulfonate

High‑alkalinity calcium sulfonate consists of diluent oil, calcium sulfonate, and amorphous calcium carbonate. The calcium carbonate is encapsulated by the calcium sulfonate, forming stable micelles, while the diluent oil is distributed around the exterior, resulting in a stable, transparent liquid system.

Saponification Mechanism of High-Base Calcium Sulfonate Grease

Under the action of a strong polar converting agent, amorphous calcium carbonate causes amorphous calcium sulfonate to dissociate from the micelles and encapsulate the agent. As a result, the previously stable micellar system becomes destabilized; the amorphous calcium carbonate then separates from the micelles and, under the combined influence of the converting agent, aggregates into calcite‑like crystals.

Lubrication Mechanism of High-Base Calcium Sulfonate Grease

Extreme-pressure and anti-wear mechanism: One view holds that, under high loads, highly alkaline calcium sulfonates decompose to release active sulfur, which reacts with the metal surface, leading to sulfurization and carburization. This results in the formation of a surface film composed of FeS, CaS, Fe3C, CaC2, and other compounds, thereby providing extreme-pressure and anti-wear performance. Another perspective is based on AES spectra obtained from the friction surfaces after four-ball tests, which reveal very low sulfur content. According to this view, the excellent extreme-pressure properties are not attributable to trace amounts of FeS and CaS, but rather to the disruption of non-Newtonian, highly alkaline calcium sulfonate micelles under high-load conditions, releasing calcium carbonate that deposits on the friction surface. This calcite‑type calcium carbonate exhibits a layered structure, with low shear strength but high longitudinal load‑carrying capacity, thus enhancing the grease’s resistance to scuffing and sintering.

Unique water-splitting lubrication mechanism:

1. Hydrophilic polar groups keep water molecules in the center of the molecular structure.

2. The lipophilic alkyl groups form a hydrophobic barrier on the molecule’s exterior.
